This site has now been visited times since the counter was installed.

NOTE:  It would appear that my pages are limited by AT&T, without warning, to 30kB!  Thus, I have been forced to add this page and separate pages to fit the lengthy Berlinerwerke saga in HO and Z scales.

ARTICULATED LOCOMOTIVES

Mallet Compounds, Simples, Little River, Yellowstones, Challengers, Big Boys, etc.

{to follow}

DUPLEX LOCOMOTIVES

B&O George H. Emerson, PRR Q1, Q2, S1, T1, etc.

TRIPLEX LOCOMOTIVES

Erie Matt H. Shay, VGN, etc.

Here, by way of Australia, of all places, is what appears to be a builder's photo of the Erie's Matt H. Shay 2-8-8-8-2 triplex, probably with her erecting crew:

This belongs here, below under "Odd Locomotives" (they don't get much odder), and under Critters:   new.gif (08 Apr 05)

[BIG turntable girder, anyone?]

Many geared steam locos were converted when they reached the end of their useful life by removing the boiler and cylinders and hooking a gas or diesel engine to the drivetrain; this example, a converted Heisler, is a real doozie!

ODD LOCOMOTIVES

Certainly, few large steam locomotives are odder than the AT&SF jointed-boiler articulateds, the VGN 2-10-10-2, or the Soviet Class AA20 4-14-4.  For odd big diesels, I doubt anything could top the PRR Centipede or the German diesel-pneumatic Hudson.  I guess the oddest electric had to be the small Swiss steamer with a pan on the cab roof and a heating element in the boiler!   new.gif (15 Mar 05)

See the exceedingly-odd Heisler, above, under Geared Locos (geared locos were odd enough to begin with!).   new.gif (08 Apr 05)

WAYNER ARTICULATED LOCOMOTIVE PHOTOS INDEX

new.gif (16 Sep 04)

Robert J. Wayner, author/publisher of Railroad Work Equipment and Special Service Cars, which slim volume is just chock-a-bloc full of oddball cars for the jaded modeler (see my Rail-Auto page, also put out Giants of the Rails - An Articulated Steam Pictiorial.

Since Wayner did not index his book and I created my own index out of desperation, I'll reproduce it here.

A sampling of those of most interest to me follows.  Some are repeated elsewhere in my RR pages where they are of specific interest.  Where appropriate, I have linked other of my pages on which the specific area of interest is covered in more detail.  Those posted here are in no particular order, other than by Wayner's pagination and image location:

Index to Wayner's Articulateds:

new.gif (16 Sep 04)

[Since Wayner did NOT include any text (other than a few long captions, and the book is only 48 pages long (plus two each inner and outer covers), I am not bothering with cross-referencing.  I have also not bothered checking out some of the obscured wheel arrangements and illegible road numbers.]

/c/ = captioned.
