Canadian Pacific Railway Bites into the 'Big Apple'
First Train Rolls into the Bronx
[Excerpted from NEW YORK, July 28 /PRNewswire/ (courtesy of Bernie Ente)] -- Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has connected New York City to its transcontinental freight service, reintroducing competition between freight lines into the City for the first time since 1968.
Provided through its Northeastern subsidiary, the Delaware and Hudson Railway, new Canadian Pacific service links New York City to CPR's 15,000-mile network from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Trains operate south of Albany over the CSX tracks that belonged to Conrail until June 1 of this year. Carload switching service is then provided by CSX to all customers in the Bronx including those at the bustling Hunts Point Terminal.
In addition, CSX will serve carload customers in Brooklyn and Queens, and Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, by transfers every weekday on its interchange train to the New York & Atlantic Railway. CPR also received trackage rights to serve a potential intermodal terminal at Harlem River Yard, also in the Bronx.
Bernie Ente reported with great enthusiasm the arrival of the first-ever CP-Rail locomotives powering a CSX train (Y-101, former CR symbol YAOP-17) across the majestic Hell Gate Bridge on 04 Nov 99, headed by CP5423-CP5689-CSX3177-CSX3148, from the CSX Oak Point Yard in the Bronx to the New York & Atlantic Railway at Fresh Pond Yard, Queens, with 85 loads, arriving at 15:00.

Now, here is an old photo of the two NYA GP10 units, #201 and #202, just delivered in the Spring of 1997, sitting in Yard A, Long Island City, just behind the NYA offices on Jackson Avenue. Once the geeps were officially painted, they were to be posed there at night, lighted up with the NYC skyline behind them (that never happened and the GP10's are long gone now). The Chrysler Building, home of NY&RA's owner, Anacostia & Pacific, is in the background.

Bernie Ente's been busy again; that's a big inspection car (LIRR coach #2802) for a small operation, almost as long as the whole railroad:

On 07 January 2000, the New York & Atlantic was busy unloading new NYCTA R-142 subway cars. Bernie Ente's photos show NYA #105 at the east end of the operation, a car on the ramp rolling off its flatcar, and NYA #156 at the west end.

#2940 was built in 1955-56 by Pullman Standard as Class P72; she seats (seated?) 120 and weighs (weighed?) 107,400lbs. "Headless" was your webmaster's little joke referring to the unfortunate fact that she has no toilet. No sooner posted than the word came back from the NYA, "We are going to put a toilet in this car; it will become NYA 1000 when its painted."
Also at Fresh Pond Yard that day (22 Feb 00) was big power, indeed! our indefatigable photographer, Bernie Ente, snapped two ex-CR SD's, (8842 and 8843) powering CSX Y-101.

They left B23-7 3153 "upstairs" at Fremont as they wyed themselves for the return trip to Oak Point Yard in the Bronx.

Bernie advises that six-axle power like the two SD units had not been seen in Fresh Pond since before "Conrail" days {if ever, other than possibly NH electric motors - SB,III}.
Let me remind you that these are scenes you won't normally see up close; the yard is off-limits to everybody except employees - don't even THINK of trespassing!

NOW here's BIG NEWS! - CP came (snuck?) in on its own train early on Tuesday, 07 Mar 00, as they began direct Selkirk-to-Fresh Pond service. The CP(D&H) train made its usual middle-of-the-night run from Selkirk Yard to Oak Point Yard. After some work at Oak Point, it then continued over the Hell Gate Bridge route to Fresh Pond, where it arrived before dawn. The crew was to be back on duty at 18:00. The CP power lay over at Fresh Pond all day behind the NYA office, out of sight from the street. As the days get longer this spring and summer, the CP train will set itself up for a perfect photo as it crosses the Hell Gate Bridge at about 19:00.
Our idefatigable official NYA photographer, Bernie Ente, was quite defatigable in the wee hours of the morning of 07 Mar 00; he wasn't about to get up that early and shoot flash - all he would have gotten was the reflection of the flash from the safety striping. He was on hand during the day, however, to record the power for that first NYA-CP/D&H interchange train resting at Fresh Pond Yard at 14:00 on 07 Mar 00, with #5698 and #5420. #5698 was on the point. Naturally enough, the train was scheduled to depart in darkness at about 18:30-19:00. (Doesn't it figure? No consideration for the fanatic railfan!)

Bernie asks that you please forgive the Polaroid image; he also shot this scene on color print and color slide film with his medium-format cameras and will have a sharper image ready shortly.
Bernie also shot Polaroids of ex-LIRR ALCo head-end Power Packs #615 (FA-1) and #614 (FA-2) bracketing #607 (FA-1) at the New York & Atlantic's Fresh Pond Yard on 12 Mar 00, a rainy Sunday; they appear towards the end of my LIRR Page 4 under LIRR Miscellany.
Long Island 's NEWSDAY for 09 Dec 01, page A31, had a full-page feature story by John Valenti all about the New York & Atlantic.
Fremont Tower is gone (Jul 00), see LIRR Contunuation Page 4.
Modelers - Noel Roche advises (27 Jul 00) that Highball Graphics has a set of HO-scale decals for the NYA locomotives.
NYA president Fred Krebs has given Bernie Ente permission to produce T-shirts of NYA "9/11 Memorial Unit" 271. This will be a quality made in USA shirt. Color will be light gray. Sizes offered are L, XL, and the universal railfan size of XXL. He will only produce a limited number of shirts and is taking "reservations" at this time (03 Mar 2002). If you'd like a shirt let him know (quantity and size) and he'll contact you when they are ready. Price will be $12 + shipping. Please reply to BERNARD ENTE rs301@juno.com. Here's the artwork that will appear on the shirt:
