This site has now been visited times since the counter was installed.

NOTE:  It would appear that my pages are limited by AT&T, without warning, to 30kB!  Thus, I have been forced to add this continuation page and separate pages to fit the lengthy Berlinerwerke saga in HO and Z scales.

[The list got so big that I moved this material from the main MRR page 07 May 2001
and then to this separate page 10 Nov 2004.]

As noted in the Berlinerwerke story, I became enamored early on of the
Great Northern - Western Fruit Express yellow reefers* and have amassed quite
a number of models (or kits) of them and their closest relatives; the list
which follows also includes a few which I never quite acquired (so far):

NOTE:  None of the above are brass (except in Z) - only wood or plastic models are noted.  One is painted silver (Model Power? - I'll have to check).  There are (or have been) other sets, as well, and brass and wood models of WFEX express reefers, which are quite different in appearance and are not listed here.  This, of course, overllooks the fact that the old Mantua car had a stamped metal body and ends.

Well - I received a mailing (18 Oct 99) from Mountaineer Brass (Route 8, Box 148A, Fairmont, West Virginia  26554-8720, 304-363-8327) which included Shoreham Shops Limited HO factory-finished brass GNEX4 Express Reefer 50' #100-1999 by Boo-Rim Precision and #400-499 (same car, after renumbering in 1945) at $171.

With the digital SLR up and running, here are the main HO WFEX cars in a single string (panned in two shots) and a bunch of N, HO, and O cars in temporary storage on the HO Berlinerwerke (29 Jan 99):

WFEX - left end of HO string

WFEX -right end of HO string

WFEX - N, HO, and O cars in storage

S and TT cars are on hand but not yet built;
an ersatz Z car exists (a production model follows:)

WOW! - There are two Z-scale (1:220) WFEX model!

and, of course, my ersatz 40' one (see my Berlinerwerke-Z Saga:

Here is my brand-new (17 Nov 02) PennZee 40' steel reefer:

* - This is very embarrassing but I never realized until 10 Nov 2004 that there actually were Great Northern Western Fruit Express BOXCARS!  I had always assumed that the models were just sloppy versions of the reefers.

# - On 23 Oct 04, I finally found an original Mantua car, a bit shopworn, and missing a few details, but, for a very few bucks, I have one!  Note that it has the old Mantua loop couplers, which are missing their threaded actuator rods (I have some in my ancient junk box, if I can find it, but I'll substitute Kadee MKD-5s):

The step castings are broken off and one end (right, above) is sprung loose, I'll need to fabricate new door latches (the one on the other side is gone), and I wonder if ANY amount of cleaning can pry that dust of ages loose from the roof, but her trucks are lightly sprung and free-rolling and she'll soon take her rightful place as the queen of my HO string!

I got my Mantua HO set when I was 7; that's well over a half-century ago and I was pretty darned pleased to spot that car in a pile of junk cars at the Greenburg Show at Hofstra University today!  I am one happy camper!

Ooops!  At the Great South Bay Model RR Show on Sunday, 07 Dec 2007, I was wandering the aisles and spotted this for $10:   new.gif (09 Jan 07)

MantuaGNBoxcar"

Only $10?  I scooped it up without haggling and even brought it home and took these photos before I realized it was a GN "BOXCAR", NOT a reefer, let alone a WFEX reefer!  Oh, well; it is an original Mantua in its original box.  More on this on my Model RR Page 1.  At the very least, they got Rocky in white, as he should be.

I had completely forgotten about the N-scale WFEX 50' wood Express Refrigerator car (N12 in the list) and, when a friend showed me the same car, #101, in HO by MDC-Roundhouse, I got wildly excited (who, me, exaggerate?) and arranged a trade for my almost-identical older car (decorated for REA):   new.gif (22 Nov 08)

The only major difference is that my old one had steel axles (rusted); this newer one has brass axles.  Now, all I have to do is swap those X2fs for Kadees and re-shoot the picture (focused, this time) and shoot the N-scale car with it.

There is an incredible simulation program by Charlie Dockstadter on steam valve gear available on the Alaska Live Steamers VALVE GEAR ON THE COMPUTER page.
